Dietetics Representative II

Hi! My name is Gagan and I am one of the dietetics representatives this year along with Kelly and am also the representative for the Dietitians of Canada Student Network (DCSN) and Health Science Students’ Association (HSSA). I’m in my 2nd year of the dietetics program and hope to work in pediatric oncology or endocrinology!

Nutrition has always been something that's been really personal to me because I’m a type 1 diabetic, so I’ve experienced firsthand how much of a role food can play in someone’s everyday life. That’s a big part of what made me so passionate about nutrition and led me towards dietetics. As a diabetic, I’ve worked with a couple of amazing dietitians throughout my life whose support helped me change my views on managing my health and thriving despite it. Their influence on me is a big reason why I am the person I am and I’d love to be able to have that kind of impact on other people.

Outside of school, I’m also a cake decorator at Confetti Sweets and have been running my own cake business since I was 15. So I guess I’ve always had this really strong connection to food in a lot of different ways, and I’m excited to see where both the creative and scientific sides of that take me.

My Advice to NUFS Students

Try to step out of your comfort zone as much as possible. Talk to the person beside you in class, or go to a club event, even if you're going alone! Your ability to make connections will be sooo important in the future. Even if it feels a little uncomfortable at first, those small moments can turn into friendships, connections, and opportunities that you'll be grateful for later!
